OpenHelix

A tool that analyzes large lists of genes to provide biological meaning

Tutorial and training materials by OpenHelix

Learn to use DAVID, a free, web-based bioinformatics tool that analyzes large lists of genes to provide biological meaning. DAVID will translate any gene list from any source (microarray probe IDs, sequence accession numbers, gene symbols, etc.) and provide a list of the corresponding annotations. Furthermore, DAVID will statistically cluster the annotations into functionally related groups to readily present a picture of the overall biology associated with the entire gene list. Advanced visualization tools allow you to view biological annotations via heat maps to easily detect patterns and overlaps. The power of DAVID rests in its knowledgebase of over 90 million gene annotations, including entries for Gene Ontologies, protein interactions, diseases, and literature, among other things. Perfect for microarray analysis or any time you want to discover the biology of a large gene set. DAVID will help you find the answers. Download the example data file by clicking here.

You'll learn:

  • to upload a gene list to DAVID
  • to select annotation categories
  • to perform and interpret functional analyses
  • to visualize data using heat maps
  • to translate gene lists into other identifications

More about the resource:

DAVID (Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery) was developed by Richard Lempicki and his colleagues at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, or NIAID. You can use DAVID to understand the biology behind large gene sets, such as those generated from high-throughput experiments like microarray expression analyses, for example. Overlapping annotations from many different sources are assembled into a complete set of gene annotations. This results in the DAVID knowledgebase having one of the most thoroughly annotated collections of genes. DAVID extracts these annotated terms associated with each gene to provide a synopsis of the biology for you. Many visualization and analysis options are also available that allow you to easily manipulate and view your results any way you choose.
