Technical Information About
OpenHelix Online Tutorials and Training Materials
OpenHelix tutorials are designed for students and researchers who have some grasp of biology, with
an understanding of basic biological concepts. Theoretical aspects of bioinformatics are not included, and no programming experience is required.
About the Online Tutorial
A new web browser window will open, and your tutorial should begin to play. The online tutorials require Macromedia Flash software, which runs on many web
browsers. If your tutorial is not
playing with both video and sound, you may need to upgrade your software. The Flash Player is
a free download from Macromedia.
You can navigate the tutorial chapters with the menu on the left of the main tutorial window. You may use buttons at the bottom of the
tutorial window to Play, Pause, Stop, or review material by using the slider.
About the PowerPoint presentations
Included in each tutorial suite is a PowerPoint presentation used as a basis for the tutorial.
Included in the file is a suggested script. Animations are also included, but may need adjustment if used with MacOS.
About the handouts and exercises
Both the handouts and exercises are PDF files. If not already on your system, you will need Adobe's Reader (
free to download here) to read these files.
Handouts are the slides printed four to a page for use as class material or for reference. Each resource has two to three exercises that give you hands-on experience with the resource. One exercise is completed in the "movie" of the online tuorial.
The materials and slides offered can not be resold or used for profit purposes. Reproduction, distribution and/or use is strictly limited to instructional purposes only and can not be used for for monetary gain or wide distribution. Copyright 2006, OpenHelix, LLC.
